🐾 Best Dog Parks Near Top San Francisco Neighborhoods

November 20, 2025

Where to Let Your Pup Run Free (and Maybe Make a Few Furry Friends)

One of the many perks of living in San Francisco? It’s an incredibly dog-friendly city—with beautiful off-leash parks, scenic trails, and neighborhood green spaces designed for dogs and their humans.

Whether you're already a local or exploring where to buy your next home, here’s a neighborhood-by-neighborhood guide to the best dog parks in SF—because happy dogs make happy homes.

Cole Valley / Haight-Ashbury

Buena Vista Park
San Francisco’s oldest park is also one of its most beloved by dog owners. While not entirely off-leash, there are open areas where well-behaved dogs can enjoy some freedom. Plus, trails, shade, and incredible views make it a gem.

Nearby Bonuses:

Tank Hill: off-leash friendly, quiet, and a local secret spot for dogs and sunsets.

Cole Valley MUNI Park: While not technically a dog park, there are always dogs running around off leash having a blast

Mission - Dolores

Mission Dolores Park (on and off leash)
Iconic and buzzing with life, Dolores Park has a large off-leash area near the tennis courts and unbeatable city views. It’s a social scene for dogs and humans alike.

Pro Tip: Early mornings are quieter for dogs who aren’t into the party scene.

Bernal Heights

Bernal Hill Park (off leash)
One of the best off-leash parks in the entire city. Expansive trails, 360° views, and tons of space for running, chasing, or just lounging in the sun. It’s a dog-lover’s dream.

Noe Valley / Glen Park

Walter Haas Dog Play Area (off leash)
Tucked above Diamond Heights, this neighborhood park is fully fenced with grassy hills and benches for humans. It’s low-key and great for pups who like space without the crowds.

Nearby:

Glen Canyon Park (on-leash trails but great variety and fresh air)

Upper Douglass Dog Park is a hidden gem tucked into a quiet corner of Noe Valley. Fully fenced with grassy hills, shady trees, and city views, it’s a local favorite for off-leash play. Dogs love the room to run, while humans appreciate the mellow vibe and friendly neighborhood crowd. Bonus: it's rarely overcrowded, making it ideal for pups who prefer space over chaos.

Inner Sunset / Golden Gate Heights

Grandview Park & Hidden Garden Steps (on leash)
While not true off-leash parks, these areas offer scenic walks and peaceful spaces. For real dog runs, head down to Golden Gate Park’s multiple designated off-leash areas, like:

  • Lindley Meadow (near 30th Ave)
  • Middle Drive East

Golden Gate Park is basically Disneyland for dogs.

The Richmond

Golden Gate Park Dog Run (off leash)

Tucked inside Golden Gate Park near 36th Avenue, this fully enclosed, off-leash dog park is a favorite for Westside pups and their people. With separate areas for large and small dogs, a mix of turf and sand, and plenty of room to run, it’s a safe, relaxed spot for dogs to burn energy and socialize. Surrounded by trees and tucked away from traffic, it feels like a secret forest playground just for dogs.

Dogpatch / Mission Bay / Thrive City

Crane Cove Park
A newer waterfront park with designated dog areas and spectacular Bay views. Bonus: It's right by Chase Center and offers plenty of open space to stroll or picnic after playtime.

Upcoming: As the Mission Rock neighborhood develops, expect even more dog-friendly infrastructure to emerge.

SoMa / South Beach / Rincon Hill

South Park Dog Run
A historic park turned urban oasis. The small, shaded dog run is ideal for a quick outing for city dogs who live in condos and need a midday break.

Nearby: Rincon Park’s waterfront walking paths are great for leashed walks with Bay Bridge views.

Marina / Cow Hollow

Fort Mason Great Meadow
Gorgeous, semi-off-leash area with stunning views of the Golden Gate. Dogs love to chase balls here—and you’ll love the backdrop for your Instagram photos.

Crissy Field East Beach

This fantastic beach on the bay is one of SF’s most popular true off-leash beaches.

Pacific Heights / Presidio Heights

Presidio’s Main Post Lawn & Lovers’ Lane Trails
With acres of trails and open fields, the Presidio offers multiple dog-friendly spots. Whether it’s the wide lawns or wooded paths, it’s a serene escape for dogs and owners alike.

Off-leash? Yes—in many open areas. Check signage!
